Dog Book Report Projects:
What's Included?

blue bullet point Dog Book Report Project: Your students will be barking with enthusiasm to start this reading project!

blue bullet point This dog shaped book report project will provide you with all of the teaching resources that you need for your students to write about the main character, climax, and conclusion of their story.

blue bullet point Traditionally, requiring students to write about the main character, climax, and conclusion is a task that most students find quite boring.

blue bullet point By using these uniquely shaped dog graphic organizers that contain writing components that are worded in dog language, your students will find writing about the climax and conclusion of the story fun, and they will complete these written responses with enthusiasm.

Free Book Report Project Templates Bulletin Board Display

blue bullet pointThis dog book report project contains four worksheets with templates that assemble into a dog. The finished dog project measures 20 inches in height and 12 inches in width.

blue bullet point These finished book report projects will make a dynamic bulletin board display of your students' work. Everything that you need to complete these projects is included in this set. All that you will need is scissors, glue, tape, and coloring pencils.

blue bullet point There are 12 worksheet and template pages in this set, as well as a 5 page color bulletin board display banner. There are 18 pages of dog related accent pieces for you to use to help you decorate your bulletin board display.

Note: Due to spelling differences in English, there are two separate sets of worksheets and templates included in this set of teaching resources.

You can select the version that contains the spelling that is used in the country where you live.
(Examples: color/colour and favorite/favourite)

The worksheets and templates that are shown on this page contain U.S. spelling rules.

Assembling Directions:

blue bullet point This dog book report project includes assembly directions on how to prepare and assemble this project. Below is a sample of the assembly directions page.

Grading Rubric:

blue bullet point A book report grading rubric is included in this set of free teaching resources.

blue bullet point I believe that it is important for students to evaluate their own work, so my book report rubric contains an assessment section for both students and teachers.

blue bullet point When students evaluate their book report projects, they color in the faces on their grading rubric worksheets. When a teacher evaluates the projects, the teacher circles the small numbers inside each box on the printable worksheets.

Below is an example of my dog book report grading rubric.

First Draft Worksheets:

blue bullet point I believe that the writing process is important and that teachers should use process writing whenever possible.

blue bullet point For this reason, my students never begin their book report projects by writing on their final draft dog templates, instead they write on first draft worksheets.

blue bullet point Next, my students edit and revise their written work on their own, with a partner, or in individual writing conferences with me.

This dog book report set is divided into
three main writing sections:

  • Main Character: (dog ears) Write a description about the main character.

  • Something Worth Barking About! (Climax) (dog body Part 1): The climax of the story is the point of greatest interest or suspense in the story. It is the turning point in the story where the action reaches its peak. The climax is usually the most exciting part of the story and something worth barking about!

  • A Tail Wagging Event! (Conclusion) (dog body Part 2): The conclusion of the story is when the main character solves the problem. The story usually ends happily and it is a tail wagging event!

  • Dog Bowl: Title of Book and Illustration

  • Dog Paws: Author, Genre, Name, and Date

blue bullet point This set of teaching resources contains two printable worksheets for students to write their first drafts on.

blue bullet point On my first draft worksheets, I have designed the writing line spaces to match the spaces allotted on the final draft dog book report templates.

blue bullet pointBelow is an example of the first draft writing worksheets for this dog book report project.

Color Dog Book Report Project Templates:

blue bullet point When I am first introducing my students to a new book report project, I believe that it is important for them to have a visual example of what a completed project looks like.

blue bullet point I always complete an example of this dog book report project before I introduce this assignment to my students.

blue bullet point Before my students begin writing their first drafts, I show them my finished dog project. This visual example immediately grabs my students' attention and they are excited to start working on this project from the very beginning. I have found that my students are engaged and use their best effort as they go through the steps of the writing process and complete this fun book report project.

blue bullet point My students also enjoy hearing about the book that I chose to do my book report project on. This is also a wonderful opportunity to share a book that I would like to encourage my students to read.

blue bullet point To save you time in coloring your example that you show to your students, I have included color dog templates in this teaching resources set. I display my finished dog book report at the front of my classroom so that students can refer to it as they are completing their own dog projects.

Free 5 Page Bulletin Board Display Banner:

blue bullet point I know that it takes teachers a lot of time to design and assemble their classroom bulletin board displays.

blue bullet point Many teachers spend their valuable time cutting out large display letters or making a banner at home on their own computers.

blue bullet point In order to help save you time in assembling a bulletin board display featuring your students' dog book report projects, I have designed a 5 page banner that is included for free in this set of teaching resources.

blue bullet point If you have access to a laminating machine, I recommend that you laminate your banner so that it will be more durable and you can use it again in the future.

I stumbled across your website over the weekend and I'm SO glad I did! Some great ideas and an extra thank you for the UK spellings! I bought the back to school pencils, punctuation puppies, Willy Wonka group project and the characters! I think these are great resources and even though it's the summer holidays, I've been into school to get my display paper up and have put up the title banners - they look brilliant! Thank you!

Name: Jemma (Year 4)

Heidi, I just had to write and let you know that your website has helped me create the most awesome author study of Roald Dahl's books. My students loved completing the big animal shaped projects you designed for The Enormous Crocodile, Esio Trot, and The Giraffe, and the Pelly and Me. For the final project, they had so much fun writing and drawing about the characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory using your Willy Wonka Factory project. Thanks for sharing your scrumdiddlyumptious ideas !

Name: Jennifer (Grade 4)
From: California, U.S.A.

green underline

I feel so fortunate to have found your website and I have referred several of my co-workers to your website. Just for the month of January, there were three teachers displaying your book reports. I had the trophy reports, my neighbor to the left had the computer reports, and my neighbor to the right had the birthday cake reports. Thank you so very much for all of your work!

Name: Mary (Grade 4)
From: New York, U.S.A.

orange underline

I just wanted to say thank you for the most amazing teaching resources that I have ever come across in my thirty years of teaching. I have used many of your book report sets this year and my students absolutely loved them. What was particularly pleasing was seeing some of my reluctant readers (especially the boys) really wanting to read books and complete the activities. Keep up the great work!

Name: Margaret (Grade 5)
From: Victoria, Australia
