Earth Day is an ideal time of the school year to integrate your science and English lesson plans together. On this teaching resources page, you will find some creative ideas to help you plan activities that focus on the environment, recycling, and language arts all at the same time.

Earth Day Parts of Speech Powerpoint:
Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22. These Earth Day lesson plans are a powerpoint activity and they are a perfect way to have your students review the parts of speech, while at the same time having your students participate in a lesson with an environmental awareness theme.

There are 15 sets of question and answer slides in this Earth Day Parts of Speech Powerpoint Lesson.

There is a student response worksheet for students to write their answers on. There are a total of 40 slides in this powerpoint presentation.

This Earth Day lesson plans set reviews the following parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

This powerpoint lesson activity is set up like the game Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Game, but with an Earth Day theme to it.

Instead of using money symbols, I have used the word "trees." For example, if students answer all 15 questions correctly, they have planted 1 million trees on Earth Day. The concept of winning trees instead of money is introduced and explained in the second slide in this powerpoint presentation.

The student response worksheet, where students write their answers, also contains the word "trees" instead of money symbols.

This response worksheet is found on slide 38 of the powerpoint presentation. To print this worksheet out for your students, open this document and when you go to print it, select only slide 38 to print, and by doing this, you will not print out all 40 slides that are in this set.

Earth Day Lesson Plans: Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 and this is a perfect opportunity for your students to write a poem with an environmental theme.

This is an E.A.R.T.H. Day acrostic poem creative writing assignment that is set inside a globe template. Students lightly color the background of the continents and oceans in the globe, and then use a dark pen to write their acrostic poems on the lines.

Students cut out the globe templates along the thick border, and then they will have unique globe shaped poetry templates.

These Earth Day globes will make a colorful bulletin board display in your classroom that will highlight this important date which is recognized around the world.

This Earth Day lesson plans set includes:

Everything that you need to complete this Earth Day poetry assignment is included in this teaching resources set. All that you will need is scissors, coloring pencils, and pens.

For creative writing assignments, I believe that it is important for students to go through the steps of the writing process.

For this reason, my students never begin writing their poems on their final draft globe poetry templates, instead they write on first draft worksheets. Then, they edit and revise their poems on their own, with a partner, or in individual writing conferences with me.

After students have edited and revised the first drafts of their poems, you should give them their final draft globe templates.

The Earth Day globe template measures 9 inches in length and 7 inches in width.

For their final drafts, students lightly color the continents and oceans using color pencils. Then, using a dark ink pen, students write their Earth Day poems on the lines.

These globe templates have thick border lines, so it is easy for the students to cut out their globe poetry templates themselves.

By using these unique globe templates, you will be able to create a dynamic poetry bulletin board display that highlights an important environmental theme as well.

As I am introducing this poetry assignment to my students, I like to begin by sharing my Earth Day poem with my students.

At the front of my classroom, I display an example of what the final draft globe templates look like.

By providing a visual example at the very beginning of these Earth Day lesson plans, my students know what their poetry assignments will look like when they have completed their final drafts.

For final draft poetry assignments, when I give my students fun templates to write on, I have found that they tend to use their best effort, and they are more careful to not make careless spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.

Besides the red template shown above, there are yellow, orange, green, and blue globe templates in this set of Earth Day lesson plans (see examples below).

You can choose to print out multiple copies of these 5 colorful globe templates and give them to your students to write their poems on instead of the black and white globe templates.

If you choose to use the color globe templates with your students, the finished bulletin board display of your students' Earth Day poems will be a bright array of rainbow colors.

I know that it takes teachers a lot of valuable time to assemble their bulletin board displays. Many teachers spend hours of time cutting out large display letters or making a banner on their own at home on their computers.

This time is valuable and better spent on developing your classroom curriculum.

To help save you time, I have included a matching 5 page bulletin board display banner (shown above) in this set of Earth Day lesson plans.

If you have access to a laminating machine, you can laminate your banner so that it is durable and you can use it year after year for bulletin board displays of these Earth Day poems.

Think Green: Environmental
Awareness Teaching Resources Set:

Earth Day is the perfect time of the year for your students to "Think Green."

This set of environmental teaching resources is designed so that you can link your language arts and science lesson plans together.

Think Green is a teaching resourcse set that includes a creative writing worksheet on which students can write an essay about ways to help protect the environment or tips for recycling items that are used in their homes.

This set of environmental lesson plans also includes a recycling sticker chart and an award certificate.

Below: This sticker chart can be cut out along the thick black borders so that you have uniquely shaped recycling trash can sticker charts. There are 20 boxes for students to earn stickers for performing tasks that are related to recycling or that are helpful to the environment.

Below: You can present this award certificate to your students at the end of this Think Green unit or when they have completed their sticker charts.

I have included a sticker chart in this recycling and environmental set of teaching resources because I use this incentive chart with my students during the months of March (Think Green for St. Patrick's Day) and April (Earth Day is April 22).

I begin this unit in March to tie in with green for St. Patrick's Day and finish it in April to tie in with April 22, Earth Day.

During March and April, my students complete various tasks to earn stickers on their Think Green sticker charts. These tasks range from bringing in aluminum cans from home, collecting paper in classrooms to recycle, or writing about something that they have done at home that helps to conserve energy or protect the environment.

I finish this unit on April 22, Earth Day. On this day, our class has a Think Green Earth Day party. All of the food items for this party are required to be green in color or healthy vegetables. My students have brought in cucumber sticks, green pasta with peas and broccoli in it, tossed salads, tabouli, and for dessert I have made green jello.

For our Think Green Earth Day party, we use paper plates (no plastic allowed) and students bring in their own fork or spoon so they don't throw plastic forks and spoons in the trash. If my students bring in food to share with their classmates, it has to be in washable containers which students would bring back home with them.

Although my students were having a party with primarily healthy food, they had a great time and enjoyed every minute of it.

By talking about how we can prepare for our Think Green Earth Day party so that we won't have to throw away any plastic or aluminum foil, it made my students think about how they could follow these same procedures for other similar events.
