Thanksgiving English Teaching Resources
November, Fall, and Autumn Reading and Writing Activities
Welcome to my Thanksgiving English Teaching Resources page. Here you will find a variety of reading and creative writing activities and lessons plans to use for the month of November, Thanksgiving, fall, and autumn.
Many of these Thanksgiving English teaching resources do not have the word Thanksgiving on them, so they can be used anytime during the fall, or by teachers living in countries that do not celebrate Thanksgiving.
On this page, you will find: unique story writing templates, reading sticker charts, teaching resources for particular novels, newspaper writing, poetry, cooperative group projects, and powerpoint presentations. I hope that you find some refreshing and new ideas to use with your own students during the month of November with these Thanksgiving English teaching resources.
This month is a perfect time to have your students fall into the habit of reading at home each evening, and to provide your students with creative writing activities that will make them fall in love with writing.
For final draft writing assignments, when I give my students uniquely shaped templates or colored worksheets to write on, I have found that they tend to use their best effort on these assignments, and they are more careful to not make careless spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
My students are encouraged to read during the month of November with unique reading sticker charts that are designed especially for this month.
For books to read aloud to your students for the month of November, I have three books that I have created a complete set of teaching resources for. I have a separate web page for each of these books that gives details and photographs of the resources that are available for these books.
Click on each underlined book title below to go directly to that particular web page to find resources that were created for that specific book title.
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein This book is a classic that was both written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein. I enjoy reading this book to my students in November because of the tree theme and using leaf response templates to create an autumn tree bulletin board display. I also use the theme of being THANKful for the people who are GIVING to us that are in our lives.
Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey Dav Pilkey is most well know for his Adventures of Captain Underpants books. He has written and illustrated this Thanksgiving picture book that is similar to the popular Christmas story 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. In this story, the children help rescue eight adorable turkeys from a farm.
The Way to Start a Day by Byrd Baylor In this teaching resource set you will find two different sets of writing resources to use for Byrd Baylor's Caldecott Medal winning picture book. This is not a Thankgiving themed book, but I like to read this book to my students during the months of November or December because in the United States, that is when two of our biggest holidays occur. As I discuss the themes in this book, and important holidays in our country, I have my students research important holidays in other countries. I have created a Country Holiday Wheel cooperative group project based on this idea. This teaching resource set also includes a creative writing topic that refers to the book that is titled: The Right Way to Start a Day of School.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein A Creative Writing Resource Set
During the month of November, I read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein to my students. This book fits well with an autumn theme because of the leaves, but it also fits well with a Thanksgiving theme because students are thinking about people that they are THANKful for and how they can be more GIVING.
I have created a teaching resource set for Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree that contains the following:
directions
idea web
first draft worksheet
final draft black and white worksheet
color final draft worksheet
grading rubric

There are 8 letters and an explanation mark in color templates, as well as in black and white templates for you to choose from. Each letter takes up an entire worksheet.
Give each group of students one of the letters. These letters are large and take up an entire worksheet. Each student in the group should write a sentence(s) about something that he/she is thankful for. There are lines inside each letter for the students to write on. These letters have a thick black border around them, so that they are easy to cut out and for displaying on your bulletin board. Below is an example with the letter Y from this set.
After students have completed their group letters, you can give each child a Thank You leaf template. These leaf templates have lines on them and students can write a short sentence about something that they are thankful for. You can make a large tree with branches on your bulletin board, and then arrange these leaves around the branches for a colorful autumn bulletin board display.
There are 6 pages of color leaf templates and 3 pages of black and white leaf templates in this set.

English Thanksgiving Powerpoint Lessons
Since it is difficult to describe each of my November English powerpoint presentations in words, I have made a video of each presentation for you to watch. These videos will give you an idea of what each lesson contains, as well as helpful tips for you if you use one of these English powerpoint lessons with your students. I hope that you find these videos helpful, but please be aware that I am an extreme novice at making videos!
Many students find traditional grammar exercises boring and dull. I encourage you to use powerpoint presentations to bring life to these boring exercises. I have designed my power point presentations and lesson plans to be engaging to your students.
The power point presentations on this page are all based on the themes from the month of November. These engaging powerpoint lessons have been designed using two standard fonts: Arial Black and Comic Sans. I chose these fonts because they are the most widely found on most computers, and they will not change the style and format when viewed on your classroom computer. I use graphic animations and powerpoint animations when I am designing my powerpoints, and I try to locate colorful background templates for the presentations that I prepare.
