blue bullet point Knight Writing Templates: This creative writing set, "If I Were a Knight," includes final draft templates for students to write on that are in the shape of a knight's helmet. For this writing assignment, students imagine that they are a knight in medieval times.

blue bullet pointYour students will enjoy creating a flip book and writing their stories inside helmet shaped templates.

blue bullet point These helmet templates are an ideal resource to use along with novels that have a castle, knight, or medieval theme. This project would also be a great creative writing assignment to include in a Middle Ages social studies unit.

blue bullet point For students who are often reluctant about writing, I have found that my students enjoy this creative writing topic, especially when they get to complete their final drafts on templates that are shaped like a knight's helmet.

blue bullet point They enjoy coloring and designing the front covers of their helmet booklets and their finished "If I Were A Knight" projects make a colorful classroom bulletin board display.

blue bullet point This "If I Were a Knight" set of teaching resources includes the following:

  • Teacher Directions
  • Idea Web
  • First Draft Worksheet
  • Final Draft Helmet Template
  • Helmet Cover Sheet Template
  • 4 Helmet Cover Sheet Templates in Color
  • Grading Rubric
  • 5 Page Bulletin Board Banner
  • 4 Helmet Bulletin Board Accent Pieces

blue bullet point Due to spelling differences in English, there are two separate sets of teaching resources. You can select the version that contains the spelling that is used in the country where you live. (Examples: color / colour and favorite / favourite)

Teacher Directions Worksheet:

blue bullet point This set includes a worksheet containing directions and ideas for how teachers can use these knight writing templates with their students. Below is an example of the teacher directions worksheet.

Idea Web Worksheets:

blue bullet point I have found that it is helpful for my students to start their creative writing assignments by beginning with an idea web. My students do not have to write in complete sentences in their idea webs, they are just concerned with mapping out the major elements of their story.

blue bullet point By using an idea web, this also helps my students to break their stories into paragraphs.

blue bullet point Below is an example of the Idea Web worksheet that you will find in this knight writing templates set. The idea webs are in the shape of a knight's shield.

First Draft Worksheets:

blue bullet point For creative writing assignments, I believe that it is important for students to go through the writing process. This process begins with their idea webs and is completed when students publish their work by completing their final draft templates.

blue bullet point For this reason, my students never begin this creative writing assignment by writing on their final draft helmet templates, instead they write on first draft worksheets. Then, they edit and revise their work on their own, with a partner, or in individual writing conferences with me.

blue bullet point Below is an example of the first draft worksheet that is included in this set. The lines on this first draft worksheet match the lines and spaces on the final draft helmet templates.

If I Was a Medieval Knight Creative Writing Worksheet

blue bullet point Depending on how long your students' stories are, you may need to give some students a second copy of this worksheet. Then, you will give those student an addition helmet template for their final drafts and their booklets will be longer than two pages.

Helmet Flip Book Templates:

blue bullet point After your students have edited and revised their first drafts, you should give them their final draft knight writing templates.

blue bullet point This creative writing assignment is designed to be a flip book that is stapled together at the top of the helmet.

  • There is a cover sheet for students to color and design.
  • The second sheet contains the writing lines. If your students have written long stories, they will need additional copies of the second helmet template.

blue bullet point The knight writing templates measures 9 inches in height and 6 inches in width.

blue bullet point These 2 templates have thick border lines around them, so it is easy for students to cut out their helmet templates on their own.

Below are examples of the final draft helmet templates.

Color Helmet Templates:

blue bullet point As I am introducing this assignment to my students, I like to begin by sharing my story with them. I model my idea web and then I read my "If I Were a Knight" story to my students.

blue bullet point At the front of the classroom, I display examples of what the final draft helmet templates look like. By providing a visual example at the very beginning of this activity, my students know what their helmet flip books will look like when they have completed all of the steps in the writing process.

blue bullet point I have included 4 different helmet cover sheets for you to use as visual examples to show your students so that you don't have to spend time coloring these helmet templates yourself.

Grading Rubric:

blue bullet point This set of teaching resources includes a grading rubric. I believe that it is important for students to evaluate their own work, so my grading rubric contains both a student assessment and a teacher assessment component.

blue bullet point When the students grade their work, they color in the faces. When the teacher assessess the work, the teacher circles the small numbers in each box beside the faces.

Bulletin Board Display Banner:

blue bullet point Finally, I know that it takes teachers a lot of valuable time to assemble their bulletin board displays. Many teachers spend hours of time cutting out large display letters or making a banner on their own at home on their computer.

blue bullet point This time is valuable and better spent on developing your classroom curriculum and grading papers, so I have designed a matching 5 page banner for your bulletin board display.

blue bullet point If you have access to a laminating machine, you can laminate your banner so that it is durable and you can use it again the following year.

Bulletin Board Accent Pieces:

blue bullet point This set of teaching resources includes 4 helmet accent pieces to help you decorate your classroom bulletin board display.

Medieval Times and Middle Ages Bulletin Board Display Ideas and Examples

blue bullet point I used these helmet templates with my students after we read "The Knight at Dawn," a Magic Tree House novel.

I stumbled across your website over the weekend and I'm SO glad I did! Some great ideas and an extra thank you for the UK spellings! I bought the back to school pencils, punctuation puppies, Willy Wonka group project and the characters! I think these are great resources and even though it's the summer holidays, I've been into school to get my display paper up and have put up the title banners - they look brilliant! Thank you!

Heidi, I just had to write and let you know that your website has helped me create the most awesome author study of Roald Dahl's books. My students loved completing the big animal shaped projects you designed for The Enormous Crocodile, Esio Trot, and The Giraffe, and the Pelly and Me. For the final project, they had so much fun writing and drawing about the characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory using your Willy Wonka Factory project. Thanks for sharing your scrumdiddlyumptious ideas !

From: California, U.S.A.

I feel so fortunate to have found your website and I have referred several of my co-workers to your website. Just for the month of January, there were three teachers displaying your book reports. I had the trophy reports, my neighbor to the left had the computer reports, and my neighbor to the right had the birthday cake reports. Thank you so very much for all of your work!

Name: Mary (Grade 4)
From: New York, U.S.A.

I just wanted to say thank you for the most amazing teaching resources that I have ever come across in my thirty years of teaching. I have used many of your book report sets this year and my students absolutely loved them. What was particularly pleasing was seeing some of my reluctant readers (especially the boys) really wanting to read books and complete the activities. Keep up the great work!

From: Victoria, Australia
